Counselling is a place where you can talk in confidence with a professionally qualified counsellor about those difficult things in your life that are troubling you or causing you distress.  Unhelpful thoughts and feelings can be dis-empowering and can leave you feeling stuck and unsure how to move forward.

In our therapeutic counselling relationship you can share and explore the things in your life that are having a negative impact.   As your counsellor I aim to provide you with a quiet space which feels safe and is free from judgements and pre-conceptions, a place where you can talk freely and be heard,  I will not give you advice nor will I tell you what to do or how to do it.  I am there to help you find your way along your journey and to empower you to make your own choices and decisions.

It is important to recognise that at times counselling can and will be a challenging experience. My aim is to ensure that you can explore these challenges within the safety of our counselling relationship. This exploration can be empowering and can lead you to look at your life from different perspectives, make your own choices and find your own resources and coping strategies.

So whether you decide to come and talk about a particular problem or whether you would like to begin your own personal journey of growth, counselling offers you the setting where this can take place.

Who I work with….

I offer a wide variety of counselling options as part of Shirley Baxter Counselling Service, which can meet many varied needs, these are listed below, please follow the links to the pages where you will be able to find more detailed information.

I undertake both Short Term (Brief/Solution Focused Therapy) which can range from 4 to 12 weeks as well as Long Term (Open-Ended) Counselling.

 Committing to the Counselling process

Counselling requires a considerable amount of commitment & responsibility from both of us in order for it to be effective.  My commitment & responsibility to you is to set aside a regular, weekly time & space when I will be available for you, which will allow us to engage effectively in the therapeutic process. If you feel in any way unsure about making this commitment, have any concerns or have any doubts as to whether counselling is for you please discuss them with me during the assessment or feel free to contact me to discuss prior to making an appointment.

Length and Frequency of Sessions

All sessions including the assessment are 50 minutes in length and take place on a weekly basis at the same time and location.
